Sanibel Island and Wildlife Refuge
Sanibel Island is a beautiful barrier island located off the coast of Florida, in the Gulf of Mexico. This area is known for its natural beauty, tranquil beach space, and is a popular destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts. This is a prime location for shelling, a popular activity that earned the name “The Sanibel Stoop” due to the posture of people bent over collecting seashells.
Half of the island is protected by the J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Refuge where there is a vast area for birdwatching, kayaking, and fishing. This is a laid-back area with a relaxed vibe. Sanibel Island is a major area known for shelling, swimming, and other beach activities.
The Sanibel Lighthouse
The Sanibel lighthouse was first lit on August 20, 1884, by keeper Dudley Richardson. Multiple people occupied the lighthouse and dwellings throughout the years.
In September 2022, hurricane Ian, came through and destroyed many areas around Fort Myers, Florida and the surrounding area. Unfortunately, the surrounding buildings on Sanibel Island were washed away and one of the old metal legs holding up the lighthouse, gave way to the hurricane and was swept away as well. Later the leg was found, and an engineer determined that the remaining structure of the lighthouse was intact and able to be restored. The Florida Lighthouse Association gave money to repair the lighthouse and five months later the lighthouse was restored, and the area was lit up once again by the beauty of this iconic focal point on Sanibel Island.
The below pictures were taken in 2020, prior to hurricane Ian.
Seashells and sea turtles
As you are enjoying this beautiful beach, beware of nesting sea turtles. You will notice their area of nesting by the yellow stakes and tape surrounding the area. Be cautious and do not disturb their nests. Nesting season runs from May 1st to October 31st.
You will most likely find an abundance of seashells at the beach, depending on the tide and time of year. Take your seashell bags to collect the shells as you comb the beach or spend time basking in the sun, or fishing on the pier.
