Grasshopper Point

Grasshopper Point Swimming and Picnic Area provided a nice reprieve from the Arizona heat. This is a day use area where families go to cool off along the cliffs of Oak Creek Canyon where nature lovers and adventure seekers can find this hidden gem where you can relax in the swimming hole surrounded by towering canyon walls. The view was beautiful along the red rock cliffs making it a wonderful destination for a relaxing afternoon cooling off in the waters, enjoying a picnic, or relaxing in this natural setting.

Address: Highway 89a Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Arizona

Hours: April 1 to October 31 - 8am to 6pm, exit gate closes at dusk. November 1 to March 31 - 9am to 6pm, exit gate closes at dusk.

Amenities: 8 sites with picnic tables and grills, restrooms

No camping or pets allowed.

Cost: $12 per vehicle up to 5 people. $3 bicycle, walk in or extra people.

Half off with Access Pass through America the Beautiful National Park Pass.

Hiking path

There is a rocky path leading to the water. Wear good walking shoes such as Teva Sandals as you navigate the path. Once you are at the water you will continue to have larger rocks to climb over. Follow the noise as you will hear others enjoying their time at this park the closer you get to the water.

There are a few places you can set up a chair to relax in the shade while the kids play in the water. You can also take food and have a snack between swimming and relaxing by the water. Some areas are deep so keep the little kids next to you or have them wear a life jacket for safety.

There are a few trails to enjoy if you prefer to go hiking.

Trails

  • Allen Bend Trail - a 1-mile hike that is mostly flat and shaded. The trailhead is near the covered picnic table.

  • Casner Canyon Trail - This 2-hour hike is listed as moderate to strenuous. The beginning of the path has you walking through Oak Creek so bring your Teva Sandals as you walk along some steep canyons with spectacular views of Sedona.

  • Huckaby Trail - From steep trails, to bouldering, and wading across waters, this hiking path is listed as moderate and is a 3-hour roundtrip hike.

Cliff jumping

Cliff jumping is discouraged but there will be several people, us included, that will be jumping. They caution that there are varying depths to the water and hidden rocks below the water surface. USE CAUTION AND JUMP AT YOUR OWN RISK. If you are going to jump, follow where others are jumping for guidance.

There were two different cliffs. The middle pick shows the smaller cliff while the picture on the left shows varying heights to jump from.

This park is close to Slide Rock State Park which I highly recommend visiting also! If you only have time for one of the parks, I recommend Slide Rock State Park over Grasshopper Point.

Below, the map shows the distance between the two parks. It also shows campgrounds close by for convenience.

You will only spend a few hours at this location, unless you are doing some hiking. There are areas you can swim or relax and sit on a large rock protruding from the water and sunbathe. Make Grasshopper Point an unforgettable experience that captures the rugged beauty of Arizona.

Have you been to either of these parks? Which one is your favorite? Comment below.

Enjoy the journey,
