Moab Tourism Center 4x4 tour
Wow, just wow! Check out this thrilling adventure where we take in some breathtaking scenery, heart-pounding excitement, and create unforgettable memories while we explore Moab trails in a 4x4.
What a fantastic time we had on our 4x4 T-Rex Tour with Moab Tourism Center in Moab, Utah. We took the Hell’s Revenge 4x4 Guided Tour and loved it! Our tour guide’s name was Ben, and we highly recommend him. He was very patient, kind, and made sure everyone was comfortable and safe during our tour.
There are several tours available in this area, but I chose this one because it was cheaper for kids. Most of the companies I researched required everyone to pay the same price where Moab Tourism Center offered a discount for children up to age 17. I am glad I went with this group as they were worth it and made the experience so much fun!
T-Rex 4x4 U-Drive Experience
I chose the T-Rex 4x4 Tours - U Drive Experience. I wanted to be able to drive my own 4x4 with a tour guide. This was a 2.5 hour tour and was available for ages 3 and up. Each 4x4 can accommodate a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 4. There were 5 - 4x4’s in our tour. You must be 21 years of age and older and have a valid drivers license to drive the 4x4. As soon as I booked our trip the company immediately called us to make sure I was comfortable driving this route as some of the trails had steep sides and steep inclines to drive on. I felt comfortable and was excited for the challenge. I also appreciated their concern.

Hell’s Revenge Trail
This tour took us on the Hell’s Revenge trail through Moab in a 4x4 (shown below). It included steep inclines throughout the tour. Please only take this tour if you are not afraid to drive on steep inclines with no sides to protect you as there were some big cliffs along the way. It is a scary drive but so so exciting!! During our tour we had to wait for a couple who ended up being scared and unable to complete the trail on their own. Our tour guide went to find them and had the lady ride in his 4x4 while her husband finished the trail on his own. Again, our safety is their main concern.
Tour times
There were 3 tour times available: 8:15 am, 12:15 pm and 4pm or 5:30pm or 6pm for a sunset tour. Evening time varies depending on time of year.
Kids safety
Kids are required to wear helmets on the tour which are provided by the company. If your child needs a car seat you can bring one but they did have one available.
Rules and expectations
At the start of the tour, they go over the rules and expectations. You will need to wear a seatbelt during the entire tour and stay with your guide. You will drive the 4x4 on the streets until you get to the trail head. They will remind you to use your turn signal and stop completely at each stop sign as the current mayor (2022) does not like the 4x4s on the road and encourages the sheriffs to give tickets. That would not be a fun souvenir so follow the traffic laws!
Our tour guide Ben was in front of us the whole time guiding our way.
Dinosaur tracks
Our tour guide Ben, (above) is showing my son the dinosaur tracks as seen in both pictures. Imagine how exciting it was for my son to see a real dinosaur track that he could actually touch. So cool!
Our group stopped (above) and waiting for the stragglers.
Jeeps
This is not private land so you will see many other people driving their own 4x4’s and jeeps along this trail. There are signs and markings on the path where you can go. It was fun to watch some of the jeeps climb to a higher rock to catch up with their team. Take a private tour in a jeep to experience the thrill for yourself!
As we were driving there were a few spots we got to drive a little faster and go up on a small sandy hill and slide back down the sand. Another way they add excitement to the tour. That was so fun, but you were not pressured to do it!!
Echo Canyon
Below you can see Echo Canyon, also known as Abyss Canyon. This is a large canyon full of trees and natural beauty. We made a stop here to take pictures and take in the view. Ben had us all yell “Echo” and listen for our echo in the distance. Hence the name.
Colorado River
This tour makes several stops along the way where you can get out and take in the view of the surrounding areas and listen as your tour guide tells you about the history of the area. This is a good time to also grab a bottle of water as you enjoy the view. This spot below was a view of the winding Colorado River. This is the same river that many rafters take when the rapids are stronger.
Things to remember:
You must be 21 years of age with a valid drivers license to drive the 4x4
Drivers license needed for proof of age
Courage and determination to drive uphill along a steep cliff in several locations
Sunscreen as it will get hot in the summer months
Closed toe shoes
Bring a water bottle, although water will be provided
Bring a carseat if needed for young children. (age 3 is the youngest for this tour)
Camera/phone for pictures
Arrive on time or you will be left
Even fun for the teenagers
This was such a fun and thrilling tour. Our tour guide Ben was amazing, and I would definitely do this tour again. I chose this tour due to cheaper prices for kids and it was the best choice. The views of the Las Sal Mountains in the distance, the red rock, and the many stories of the area and people who once called this area home our tour guide told us about made this trip exactly what we needed with teenagers in tow. My teens really enjoyed it which was a nice bonus. I would have kept driving the 4x4 all day, it was so fun!!
You have many options of companies to choose from, but I would recommend you call Moab Tourism Center for your next 4x4 adventure!!
Camping nearby
~~Check out our camping location in the Manti- Las Sal Mountains only 24 minutes from the Moab Tourism Center. This area provided a quiet place to stay for the night. You can camp by yourself or in groups. There was no cell service at this camping location so download a map of the area if needed before you head to this area.
Cost: FREE
Amenities: None, some shade trees. Beautiful view of the mountains.

Moab Tourism Center has many other tours to choose from. If you have limited time and are needing a smaller tour due to kids or time, check them out for their new shorter tour to Echo Canyon and back (coming soon)! You can also take advantage of a private tour or try the longer trip to Hurrah Pass Tour to explore and experience the history of Puebloan Petroglyphs.
