Hurricane Preparedness Essentials
When moving to Florida and going through a few hurricanes a year I created a list of the most essential things needed. This list is what we have found to be useful when living in a zone that does not require evacuation (central Florida). If you are living in an evacuation zone, your list will require more and will be individual to your situation. Always listen to the advice of the state and what they advise for your area.
Make sure you have enough supplies to last several days and make a plan for evacuation if needed.
Here is a list of items we always have on hand when preparing for a hurricane:
Flashlights and batteries (waterproof flashlight)
Sandbags to fill with sand to put in front of doors
45-quart Cooler and ice in case electricity goes out (65-quart cooler)
2000 W Generator (our favorite for camping) or a larger generator with 4750 W for hurricanes
Grill and charcoal or gas grill and propane
Plywood for boarding up windows and doors if needed
Battery operated fans with LED lights in case the power goes out in the summer
5-gallon bucket to store water in. If you need to flush the toilet when the water is off, you can take some of the water from the bucket and drop it into the toilet to flush.
Refill medications in advance
Cash - grab extra cash in case power goes out and businesses cannot accept credit cards
Waterproof shoes/boots
Blankets
Extra towels
Hurricane food items
Making sure you have non-perishable foods on hand are essential to survival when your power is out. See my full list of camping food options at the link below. This is when a camping stove or grill will come in handy.
Precooked bacon
Hot dogs can be warmed on the camp stove or grill
Canned beans. These can be added to any packet of rice
Precooked pasta
Bottled water
Paper plates and plastic silverware
Items that were scarce during hurricane preparation
I recommend you get these items early as they cleared out quickly in my area. Get gas for all your cars early as they were out of gas a couple days before the hurricane hit us.
Gas
Water bottles
Eggs
Charcoal
Paper towels
Surviving a hurricane requires advance preparation. Always remember if you are required to evacuate then do so. Don’t think you can outsmart a hurricane, if the state is asking you to evacuate then do it!!
Being prepared for a hurricane is crucial to ensure safety during the storm. By having essential items such as water, non-perishable food, flashlights, and a first aid kit available, you can face the challenges of power outages, limited access to resources, and potential evacuation without a significant worry. Always protect yourself and your family when severe weather happens.
Enjoy the journey,
